Used IBC Container: What to Check Before Buying

Buying a used IBC container? Check the cage, valve, previous contents and UN rating first to avoid costly mistakes and contamination risks today.

Buying a used IBC container: what you need to check first

By Hugo from Huchem

A used IBC container is one of the most cost effective ways to store water, chemicals, feed additives or waste liquids on a farm, building site or in an industrial unit. With temperatures dropping to around 6°C and rain forecast across the UK this week, many businesses are topping up bulk storage before outdoor work slows down. Before you buy a second hand IBC, it pays to inspect four things properly: the cage, the valve, what the container previously held, and its UN rating. Get any of these wrong and you risk leaks, contamination or even a breach of transport regulations.

Inspect the cage and pallet for structural damage

The steel cage and base pallet carry the full weight of around 1000 litres of liquid, so structural integrity matters more than cosmetic condition. Walk around the unit and check for bent, rusted or missing horizontal and vertical bars, cracks or splits in the plastic or steel pallet base, loose or missing top and bottom retaining clips, and even seating on the ground with no tilt or warping. A sound cage should hold the inner bottle firmly with no movement when you push against the side. Avoid any unit showing signs of forklift damage, as this can compromise stacking strength and safe handling.

Test the valve and check for leaks on a used IBC container

The outlet valve is the part most likely to fail after repeated use. Open and close it fully to check the handle turns smoothly without sticking, and look for cracks around the valve body and thread. Check the seal where the valve meets the bottle for dried residue, which can indicate a past leak. If you plan to use the container for a different liquid than it previously held, replace the valve gasket as a precaution, since many are only rated for specific chemical groups.

Find out what the IBC previously contained

Previous contents affect both safety and suitability. Ask the seller for the original product label or safety data sheet reference, and look at the printed markings on the bottle itself, which usually show the last product filled. This matters for three reasons. Food grade liquids need containers that have only ever held food safe products. Chemical residue can react with a new liquid, causing discolouration or off gassing. Some previous contents make a container unsuitable for reuse without specialist cleaning. If in doubt, choose a rinsed and cleaned used IBC rather than one with an unknown history, particularly for drinking water, feed or food industry use.

Check the UN rating and certification plate

Every IBC approved for transporting hazardous or regulated liquids carries a UN rating stamped or printed on the cage or bottle. This code confirms the container has passed testing for the type and concentration of liquid it is approved to carry. Before buying, check that the UN code is still legible and matches the liquid you intend to store, that the manufacture date sits within the typical five year reuse window, and that there is no visible UV degradation on the plastic bottle, as this weakens the material over time. Containers without a visible or valid UN rating should only be used for non regulated liquids such as plain water or non hazardous washdown fluid.
