Cobwebs on your building this autumn? Here is how to deal with them
If you are wondering how to remove cobwebs from buildings without having to do the same job again a week later, autumn is the time to get it right. With mild, unsettled weather forecast across the UK this week, spiders and insects remain active for longer, and webs build up quickly on window frames, fascias, canopies and outdoor lights. On commercial premises, warehouses and caravan parks, a facade covered in old webs and insect residue looks neglected.
Brushing webs away helps for a few days, but they tend to come back to exactly the same spots. The more effective approach is to clean the surface properly and leave it less attractive for new webs to attach to.
Why cobwebs build up so quickly in autumn
Cobwebs collect where insects gather and where there is shelter from the wind. Outdoor lighting attracts insects in the evening, so light fittings, security cameras and the frames and soffits around them are usually the worst areas. Window frames, canopies, roof edges and the eaves of sheds and garages also offer the shelter spiders look for. Once a web is abandoned it traps dust, pollen and soot from the air, which is why old webs turn grey and leave dark marks on light coloured paintwork and uPVC.
How to remove cobwebs from buildings, step by step
A good result comes from combining mechanical cleaning with a treatment that leaves a protective layer behind.
1. Brush off loose webs first. Use a cobweb brush or a soft brush on an extension pole to remove loose webs, egg sacs and insects. Move any spiders away from the area before you treat it. The aim is to remove the webs, not to harm the spiders.
2. Choose a dry spell. Apply the treatment on a dry surface on a day without rain forecast, so the product is not diluted or washed off before it has done its work.
3. Apply evenly with a low pressure sprayer. Shake or stir the Cobweb Remover before use and spray it evenly over the surface. Pay extra attention to seams, gaps, corners of frames and the area around outdoor lighting, as these are where webs return first.
4. Remove excess liquid. Wipe away runs and excess product with a clean microfibre cloth to prevent streaks or stains, especially on glass, gloss paint and dark surfaces.
5. Repeat when needed. The protective layer is temporary. Repeat the treatment when you notice webs and insect residue starting to stick again.
Which surfaces can you treat?
The Cobweb Remover is designed for outdoor surfaces such as plastic and painted window frames, roof edges, fascias and facades, canopies and verandas, outdoor lights and security cameras, and garages, sheds and warehouses. It is also suitable for boats, yachts, motorhomes, caravans, machinery and outdoor installations, where webs and insect residue collect in hard to reach places. Always test first on a small, inconspicuous area, particularly on older paintwork, natural stone or special coatings.
If the facade itself is heavily soiled with dirt, fine dust or soot, clean the brickwork first with a suitable wall and facade cleaner, rinse it thoroughly and let it dry before you treat the frames and fittings against cobwebs.
Common mistakes and safety tips
The most common mistake is spraying over thick, old webs. The product then sits on the web instead of the surface, and the grey residue stays behind. Always brush first. Applying too much does not give longer protection, it only increases the risk of streaks. Do not use a sprayer that has previously held acids or solvents without rinsing it thoroughly, and rinse your sprayer with clean water after every job so the seals last longer.
Wear suitable gloves and eye protection when spraying overhead, read the label and safety data sheet before use. When working at height, use a stable platform or an extension pole rather than overreaching from a ladder.
