Bio descaler with citric acid: how it works and how much to use

Citric acid dissolves limescale by reacting with calcium carbonate: the acid breaks down the scale chemically, after which the residue simply rinses away. That makes it an effective and environmentally friendly alternative to aggressive chemical descalers. Available from Huchem as Bio Descaler, food grade and in stock.
Citric acid dissolves limescale by reacting with calcium carbonate: the acid breaks the scale down chemically, after which the residue simply rinses away. That makes it an effective and environmentally friendly alternative to aggressive chemical descalers. At Huchem it is available as Bio Descaler in 5 litre and 10 litre cans, and in 1,250 kg IBCs for industrial use.
How does citric acid descale?
Citric acid reacts with lime (calcium carbonate), dissolving the deposit so it can be rinsed away. That is exactly why it works so well: it attacks the scale chemically instead of only scrubbing at it mechanically. Descaling also helps equipment work more efficiently and last longer. Regular descaling prevents the build up that reduces performance and increases energy consumption, in kettles and boilers as much as in heat exchangers and cooling towers.
What can you use it for?
Citric acid is a natural acid that is very effective at removing limescale from a wide range of surfaces such as taps, tiles, appliances and pipework. Think of:
- Kettles, coffee machines and water boilers.
- Washing machines and dishwashers.
- Taps and shower heads.
- Heating systems and boilers.
- Industrial equipment, heat exchangers and pipework.
Why bio and not simply chemical?
Citric acid is a naturally occurring compound that is biodegradable and contains no harmful chemicals. It breaks down completely in the environment within days to weeks, is suitable for discharge via the sewer and falls within the OSPAR guidelines for environmentally safe substances.
But the environmental argument is only one side of the story. Citric acid also has antimicrobial properties and helps to kill bacteria and mould. So you do not only remove the scale, you also clean hygienically. For businesses in food and catering this is especially relevant: the Huchem Bio Descaler is food grade, so it can be used in environments where hygiene and food safety come first.
Points to watch
Citric acid works well on most materials, but there are exceptions. Do not use it on aluminium, copper, bronze, marble, other calcareous natural stone or wooden floors. On appliances with copper or aluminium internals you can still descale, but use a lower concentration and a short contact time to limit attack on the metal. When in doubt, always test on a small, inconspicuous spot first.
Step by step
- Choose the right dose for the application (see the table below) and dilute the Bio Descaler in lukewarm water.
- Apply the solution to the area to be descaled or fill the appliance with it.
- Allow to work for 15 to 30 minutes, longer for stubborn deposits.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Repeat if necessary.
Dosing guide
| Application | Citric acid | Water | Contact time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kettle | 30 g (2 tbsp) | 1 litre | 20 to 30 min |
| Coffee machine | 30 g (2 tbsp) | 1 litre | 1 rinse cycle |
| Washing machine | 100 to 150 g | full drum | 1 wash at 60 °C |
| Heating system / boiler | 50 g | 1 litre | consult your installer |
| Taps and shower heads | 30 g (2 tbsp) | 1 litre | 15 to 30 min |
Conclusion
The Huchem Bio Descaler is a practical, environmentally friendly and widely applicable limescale remover. Suitable for domestic and professional use, food grade and available from stock.
