Road salt
Road salt lowers the freezing point of water. This prevents water on the road from freezing and creating slippery conditions. Road salt can be used both preventatively and when ice has already formed.

Road salt, brine, and de-icing granules are the most commonly used de-icing agents for combating slippery conditions. Road salt, consisting of sodium chloride, is the most common option for residential use and is effective at temperatures down to approximately -6°C to -8°C. It lowers the freezing point of water, causing ice and snow to melt. Although inexpensive and widely applicable, it has disadvantages such as corrosion of vehicles and infrastructure and negative environmental impacts with prolonged use.
Brine, a mixture of salt and water, works much faster than road salt for clearing ice and snow from paths and roads. Another advantage of brine is that it is effective down to -15 degrees Celsius. Like road salt, brine can be used preventatively. However, it does have the same disadvantages of corrosion and negative environmental impacts with prolonged or frequent use.
Urea de-icing granules are an environmentally friendly alternative to road salt and brine, and are also effective down to -25 degrees Celsius. De-icing granules are, however, more expensive than road salt and brine.

To prevent or combat slippery conditions, you can grit in various ways and at various times:
- Preventative gritting: If you expect inclement weather, you can grit the roads preventively. By gritting the roads beforehand, you prevent snow and ice from adhering to the road surface. In mild temperatures and with limited precipitation, this is often sufficient.
- Curative gritting: As soon as it starts to snow or icy, you can apply curative gritting. This keeps the surface passable or makes it safe again as quickly as possible.
- Restraining gritting: If the roads are already slippery, you can apply restraining gritting. This not only helps to reduce the slipperiness but also acts as a preventative measure against future precipitation.
